Glasgow Zoo

Hi .....

Been dredging up old photos and was really upset to come across the ones of Glasgow Zoo.... My memories only give me the brass plaque from when the giraffe hit the keeper and killed him! Am I remembering correctly?

Not directly linked to the zoo, but just along the road is Paterson's Quarry.

A while back there was a proposal to turn this site into an 'urban forest', but it all seems to have gone quiet now and I can't see any recent news about it. Does anyone know if this idea was dropped?

Cheers for the info guys.

Headed down there with two mates today. Really not much left. Only the gatehouse and aviary seem to stand.

Some photos I took here - excuse the random ones from around Glasgow Green.

Five years on and the trees are growing [planted about 2ft. apart which means half of them will die] but you only need to glance from the M74 to realise this is nowhere near being the "the size of 600 football pitches" or indeed the "biggest urban forest in the UK". Utter tosh.

This site sits astride the main motorway entrance to the Commonwealth Games city from the south.
It is undeniably a coup. Keep yer windae shut.

Thanks for the info. It's a shame there's not been more done then.

Maybe there will be a "phase 2" when the dump is finally shut.

This thread inspired the following T-Shirt... and brought back loads of memories from my visits to Calderpark as a young kid.

Part of me would like to brave the neds and what appears to be wild jungle terrors (that early post about "furries" gave me the heebiejeebies) let loose after Calderpark shut - but I think mys response would just be "grown man crying, walking about ruins possibly having parents phone police on him".
What a fascinating place, most of the photographs are sad, but also haunting and creepy. I won't go down to those woods today as I'm sure of a big surprise.. that I won't enjoy.

I made my way there today, but didn't hae the courage to go near the old Calder Park zoo. I spoke to an old guy who joked that he didn't know if any animals had been left in the derelict zoo site, but people in the surrounding area, going walking in the woods near dusk, had spotted this:

Contrary to some views of posters on this thread the immediate neighbourhood of Broomhouse (which doesn't even have a shop, never mind an 'Offy') is light years away from being a ghetto or some kind of ned haven. In fact Broomhouse is exapanding at warp speed due Glasgow City Council re-zoning all the greenbelt in order to allow the developers to build hundreds of big price houses. Still not a shop planned for mind you, and not an extra classroom provided for in local schools.

You would be perfectly safe exploring Calderpark but using commonsense like you would anywhere else in the Glasgow area best to avoid weekend evenings.

*Knocks on the door*
Ah, good, yer all still here :)

I finally got round to visiting the zoo a few weeks ago with my mate Mike ( Botanics, too, but we found the same new welded sheets as mentioned elsewhere... rope time! ) and got some pics of what's left.

Gutted I missed the buildings still standing :(

We did find a shoe though.
And some cow bones.

Umm..
*Whistles innocently*
