It might seem a bit odd to post a reply four years later but anyway, here it is. I was interested in your Gott Burn. If it was just called "Gott", it is probably not really a proper name, but just a Scots term for a drain. In the online Scots dictionary at http://www.dsl.ac.uk the word "gote/gott" is defined as 'a drain or ditch, a gutter, etc.'. The English word "gut" is the same word, in the meaning of 'a narrow channel'. In the online dictionary there's a nice quote from the Burgh Records referring to 1700, "20 Jan.: The Magistrates and Cownsell ... do herby suffer and permitt the said John Lowk to dige and cleang the goatt or ditch."

Has anybody been through the big gates at 91(?) Union St ? This is the entrance between the shops called G Force on the left and Games Workshop on the right.
It used to be a delivery entrance for parcels in the late sixties. I worked as a porter with British Rail for a while then and I remember the warren of covered passageways under the station. The only one that had anything like building fronts in it was the passageway which came in from Union Street at No 91(?) There were doorways and windows and what might have been shop fronts, all substantially built. From memory the passageway leads in from Union Street and drops a fair bit and then bends right and then left and then comes to a plain (concrete covered ?) wall with the entrance to a set of featureless tunnels underneath the station. The building fronts were on the right hand side not very far into the passageway.
In later years I've tried to go back into this passageway but the only time I ever found the gates open I was papped out with a flea in my ear.

Sorry to open a very old, but fascinating thread :)

I believe a lot of the tunnels were used to transport slaves from house to house, as they werent to be seen "above ground"

I have been trying to research this, but not having much luck online.

however a LOT of glasgow not so pleasant history appears to be easily buried

Some eejut forum.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page it gives a link to the evidence.

The (online) Herald has an article today regarding what's under Central Station. The heading is "Rail fans can get above their station with a tour of Central." The article itself starts off with:
"Tickets for the tours go on sale today at £10 per person, with profits going to cover the cost of staff and improvements to the 135-year-old station. The first guided tours will take place on Friday (7th November, I guess) and will be run three days a week, usually at weekends."

The exciting bit for you lot (I'm stuck here in Vienna) is the following:
"From there, participants will head into the station's catacombs, where they will explore the abandoned basement and tunnels hidden beneath the station and descend winding stairwells to the long-lost Victorian streets of Grahamston village, which once bustled with shops and activity before the station was built over the top in 1879."

Are they telling the truth?

Here is the link to the tour website. It also includes a climbing up onto the glass roof gantry. Looks interesting.

Went on the tour last night, fascinating, but not a mention of Grahamston.

There is a Facebook page called lost glasgow, and on 5th dec they posted a photo of under central station before it was built. Sorry don't know how to link to the photo. Also maybe this is old news? Don't know where the photo came from but it is amazing to see!

Thanks! Shame I had to have the aperture so high that only the girder at the far left is in focus.
