Welcome to HG! Actually, I think the fact you thought to use Molendinar as your username was fab - obviously none of the other members thought to use this obvious Glasgow link!

Sorry but the Molly is famous - went to St Kentigerns School in the late 60s, early 70s and the worst job was fishing the ball out of the burn

Haha! so now I've managed to pick an alias that is also shortened to sound like a 19th century prostitute too.. Oh well.

Yeah I'm afraid I've never even seen the burn, I'm from Hamilton originally so I've only read about it in books under the more romantic description of druids crossing it via the drygate to worship in the sacred groves of Fir Park where the Necropolis now stands. Apparently dry is an old germanic word for priest. Just reading this again out of "street names of the city of Glasgow" by Carol Foreman.

It also says that the Molendinar burn's name came from one of 3 sources;

gaelic;

Meall an dhuinn ard - the stream or hill with the brown top

or

Muileaun-aar - the mill of the abbot

or Latin;

Molendinarius Rivus - Mill burn

The book plumps for the last one cos there were mills there apparently stretching right back. I guess you coul dsay it was the latin or the gaelic really, the gaelic seems to have a lot of latin in it anyway? I'm not an expert, anybody else?

Molly, you have also missed a walk we did earlier this year when a bunch of us took rods in hand and dowsed the route of teh Molendinar.

I will definitely make an effort to do a bit of a walk, that area is one of those areas that I've been driven through all my life, but you only know bits and pieces, you can't connect it all together, you know?
