The result of simple, yet effective design!

The tunnel is obviously heading up Cathedral St for a reason, being so close to the GRI I'd say its a safe bet the BTtunnel links up to the older GRI tunnel.
here i go, it's coming for me through the trees

I had noticed the vent at the Royal before, but hadnt paid any heed to the hatch before. I had thought the only one with a hatch was the Hope Street vent, but it seems that they all do.

John, it would probably be one of these that's down there:

Still quite a feat to construct without anyone knowing. It also shows the size of the smaller tunnel too.

I didn't see the manhole and vent at the end of Cathedral street either, and I was looking for it!! In my defence I was driving so not paying full attention.

can someone map out all these mysterious vents/tunnel openings? the one at Blythswood Street possibly connects to the two near the Kingston Bridge (Washington St/ Argyle St).

I think these are the only ones we've found.

Map here.

Updated...

When you see them on the map like that it does look like there should be more. Anybody want to speculate with join the dots?

I don't actually want to go in any tunnel just curious of it's route.... so don't worry. :D

I know everybody loves my pointless pictures of pavements so here's another ... ::):

Corner of Holland Street and St Vincent Street... I'm seeing these things everywhere now, wasn't even looking just walking back down to work. 8O
I need another holiday.

I think it's the railings in stupid places that give it away...

Man, where is your sense of adventure! I'd be down there like a shot, if I could get one of those hatches open.

Took a trip from High street to Dial house today Crusty You know my fascination for stanks, drain covers and GPO access points. Well there is a fair concentration of Telecom, GPO PO covers in that area, not to mention Scottish telecom and the rest,

I did go into Dail House and press the buzzer for enquiries where a nice woman came out .
“ Can I take pictures of the building from out side”
“Yes” she said
“Can I come in to take pictures of the old parts of the building”
“Err no you can't, you will have to phone BT and request that” she said
“Can you tell me anything of the tunnel?” I asked
And for a split second she had that face of “how do you know about that”.
“ There is no tunnel” she replied
Thanks bye

Heres some photos

Does this look familiar ?

Have a read at this http://www.birminghamanchor.co.uk/. Good site. It seems to explain why there is warm air blowing out of these vents.

Subject to a government D notice for 15 years Anchor came off the secret list and press were allowed down there for the first time in the late 60's. Two newspaper articles appeared telling of Birmingham's best kept secret, many GPO workers at the time didn't realise the importace of the exchange as it was referred to only by the name Anchor and kept strictly secret. These two articles mention a fourth exchange in Glasgow but as already stated there is no evidence this exists.

Yes, that's not Dial House. I used to work in Dial House, and I can assure you that's not it.
