World War II Bombing

Postby taymil » Sun Apr 13, 2014 9:29 pm

I am trying to find the name of a church that was destroyed by incendiary bombs toward the end of the war and when it happened I lived in Dixon Avenue,( Off Victoria Rd near Queens Park ) and we were trapped in the shelter behind our tenement for a short time because of fire in the neighborhood. A church a few blocks away was destroyed. Looking at map it must have been towards Langside Rd or Cathcart Road and not Victoria Rd. I know the raid occurred after the blitz' that destroyed parts of Clyde Bank and Maryhill, since there was a period of quiet. Anyone help me ?. i am writing an autobiography, and trying to get dates and locations correct. I was between 10-12 at the time.

Jeffrey is wrong. The actual date is 24th March 1943. Checking my dads ARP diary he notes" Wednesday 24th March 1943 Air Raid 12.15am to 2.00am "8" down out of 25 planes". The "8" down is wrong. He was on ARP duty at Yarrows at the time.

ImageQueens park church then and now by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr

My parents have a friend that lives nearby, their house has ornate plasterwork and cornicing in the living room but plain plaster ceiling in the dining room. Apparently an incendiary bomb went through their roof and destroyed the plaster ceiling during the same raid but it didnt go off which saved the house.
