Building's within a building

Postby muriblue » Thu Nov 07, 2013 8:50 pm

First time poster here, I am looking for a little help finding out what buildings were on the site of the Goldberg's building before it was built?
The reason being is that it's in the process of getting demolished now and during a Uni trip to the Merchant City i photographed what is left of a L-Shaped building with visible Mansard roof, furthermore there is also a Timber roof, clad in Slate protruding below. All inside the middle of the building? :? I took pictures today and if wanted i will post them up.

All and any help appreciated,

Many thanks :)

Very interesting photographs, this could have beenthe remains of an old "Calander Works" - see this map

There were quite a lot of older buildings in that lane, which was used as the goods inwards department for Goldbergs.

Thanks, it would be nice to find out what they were used for and why they built over and around them? Everyone knows there is a lot of history within the Merchant City, what a shame it would be if buildings like this were demolished without anyone ever knowing that it existed. :(

Here's another photo of one of the older buildings on Smith's Court Lane:

Image

I believe that was listed, as was the building that sat on the corner of Trongate and Candleriggs, which was originally part of a 1790's warehouse complex which ran the full length of Candleriggs to Wilson Street. Goldbergs' moved in in the 1920's and made additions and alterations to the site in 1936, 1953 and 1967.

Another good example of that (a bit more recent) is Glasgow Airport, where the Basil Spence building is partly inside the new structure. I have to tell the young 'uns that when you are standing waiting to check in, you are actually standing on what was once the pavement ::):
