Meanwhile others sit down and write out their Tax and N.I. returns ?

:) how wrong you are ? travelling showpeople pay bills like everybody else.the bills they pay are more than most can afford.thousands of pounds just to get insurance to operate for starters.public liability council tax national insurance rent for places of residence all year round.rent for opening in towns deisel bills electric bills the list goes on.

Apologies on behalf of the forum, S.

One of my many faults is a non-obvious appreciation of our valued but non-regular subject-area posters. Cell on power-related things, Alycidon on rail, that sort of thing. I mean, what do you say? "Great post!!" is just silly and can only be said so many times. But it's good to have all you guys around.

Scaryman2u has turned up at HG events in Real Life, and kudos to you for that, Scary, but as with any internet-y thing, it's always worth checking the posting time.

exactly this thread has been most interesting, you forget about the travelling fair folk, can remember there was a yard in saltcoats that the fairground folk used when the shows were there. what interests me is more the rigs themselves as there is some stonking trucks and living vans, being a bit of a caravan nut seeing a traditional showman's van with all the ornate glasswork is amazing

respect to all of them

OK Fair comment, I have signed in a few times since my post, but cannot think of a good posting time to reply as i`m restricted to when I can be on here, for the sake of clarification on these restricted times please advise me when it is suitable to post on here for the more tolerant readers or just shut HG down at 10 pm !

showmans caravans can cost thousands of pounds.some have articulated caravans towed by a lorry others smaller caravans such as hobbys towed by a van or jeep.there are specialist caravan makers such as pilot who make traditional showmans accomodation which comprise of two bedrooms bathroom kitchen and living room.early models gave way to newer ones which included pull out sections to make the living space bigger inside.the pull out sections of the caravans were designed so that they could be pushed back in while on the road and didnt get in the way of the internal fittings of the van itself so that you could still go from room to room with the pull out sections pushed in.

nowadays things have moved on with many showmen purchasing caravans such as american travel trailers which have every mod con you can think of.they come in various sizes right up to over 50ft in length with several pull out sections, gas central heating, air conditioning etc etc.an american travel trailer wasnt so common in years gone bye but now they are all the rage.the transport too has changed with showmen getting their lorries painted up in distinctive liveries so that they stand out above the rest.hornes pleasure fairs being a prime example of a showmans fleet which many a passer bye casts their eye over.painted in a cream black and green colour scheme hornes took it one step further by adding chrome accesories to their trucks.kind of like the trucks you would see at truckfest in ingleston.

Scotsjock, one of Petershill's best players of the late 1960's was a forward called Johnny Pullar, who came from a fairground family. He went on to play for Hibs and Ayr United. The last we saw him at Petershill was when he organised a match for some showmen at the old Petershill Park around/over 10 years ago.
