When the Drum was being built there were big piles of wood around. I remember nearly everyone in the close would take some of the wood for wee garden fences, box in the bath or if on the top floor flooring the loft. I recall guys clubbing together to hire a bus to take them to work down in the yards in South Street. Another bus I seem to recall took women over to Claremont(?). They made clothes for Marks & Spencer etc. Such was the lack of public transport.
I recall a Drumchapel St Andrews in Kinfauns Drive-Sunday school trip by steam train from Drumchapel Station.
All the tickets were sold by the Friday night so the minister got on to the station people and they had extra carraiges laid on by the Saturday morning. Imagine that now. I think they had over 1,000 people on that trip!

I heard this story before and was even told where the "party" was supposed to be! I was told a kickabout with a football took place out in the street at 5am.

Where did this video come from and what was it for? Looked like early 90s possibly?

What street is that at 1:33?

As a long term resident of the Drum I am unsure about just what street this is...but it is one video of a whole number of Drumchapel videos hosted on an faceless unamed website. While we are on the subject of Drumchapel, apart from being shot and mounted does anyone know what happened to these concrete beauties.

Street at 1.33 is Lilyburn Place looking east towards Monymusk Place. Lilyburn PLace area was "remodelled" at a cost of several millions in the late 1980's early 1990s. Now all demolished. The concrete hippos were part of a remodelling excercise in the Fettercairn Avenue area in 1980-82. £8 - £10 million was spent on this excercise which if I recall from a stormy residents meeting of the time the locals branded a waste of money. The whole regeneration "thing" was forced on the residents with little or no consultation. The hippos were part of an urban regeneration programme or urban landscape project ie after the houses were done up/with selective demolition/ this was a sop ie part of an urban play park for the kids!! Where are these expensive trinkets now? Another example in the Drum of these times is the stainless steel bird statue "thing" outside the old Mercat. How much did that cost? There was this "urban architecture" thing at the time in Glasgow. The bird thing in Buchanan Street was part of it.The new cop shop should stop the bird thing being stolen!! Perhaps a total costing of the milions spent in Glasgow on Darnley/ Easterhouse/ Castlemilk/Drumchapel on these so called "regeneration" projects in the period 1978 until around 2000 would really shock people. Many of these regeneration projects have long since been pulled down/demolished. Yet better areas like Mosspark/Riddrie etc built in the 1920's30s needing re-wiring and reroofing did not get investment at that time as the money was thrown at these 1950s schemes in these urban regeneration schemes.

Hi Moonbeam. Thanks again for your informative reply. As someone who lived in the scheme from 53 until 89 I well remember
the manouvering of all those who claimed to represent and support those who lived there. Even today, I still on occasion drive through the scheme and wonder if it ever was a good place to live or be brought up in. Despite this, I can't help but feel that despite the initial dearth of resources, life for me as a child was full of great times and wonderful experiences.
Just prior to leaving the scheme in 1989 I worked with a number of Drumchapel residents in producing the video "Drumchapel The Frustration Game" which was a political critique of Municipal Socialism and those who dismissed and ignored the views and feelings of Drumchapel residents. If you haven't has a chance to view the video the only unedited, full copy is available on other faceless resources under the name Drumchapel The Frustration Game Musical Edition. You might (or perhaps not agree) with what this video said about Drumchapel at this time.

Lived in Drumchapel. Agree with much of the video frustration game. Was at meetings where the "officials" told the residents what they were getting.

I recall thousands of pounds being spent on slabbing, clothes poles bin shelters in back garden areas. The officials wanted people to put out their washing in the back. Nearly everyone had tumble dryers by this time and as my wife noted at the meeting "the kids nick the clothes". The "officials" put in so called kid friendly play areas which were not used.Better the kids could play in the back areas but these had been slabbed with bin shelters and clothes poles. The community pride I recall from the 1950s by the early 1970s was long gone. I recall the early 1970s when people dumped labour councillors and put in untried SNP people. Probably a protest vote. I recall people using these back areas as wee gardens to grow potatoes etc.
By the late 1960s this was dying out in our street.
