Coo, I don't think this photo has been posted yet. The reconstruction at Buchanan St Subway station in the late 1970's.

So can anyone get a photo of the Merkland Street chamber, or the old depot pit ?

I was looking out for them the other day, but it's bloody difficult.

One problem might be using flash photography on the subway might spook a few passengers if they don't know what's happening :? Might be ok on a quiet train.

I know where the old merkland station is, and the old pit. The pit would be very difficult to flash photograph as you pass it at a good speed and its very short. Merkland street would be easier as the trains are either accelerating or braking through the station.
I was on an empty carriage the other day and stuck my face against the window and trust me, there is nothing to see. The platform has been removed to make way for the electric rails and I did'nt see any staircase remnants.
The problem with photographing it, is the curve of the windows. Pressing the lens against it would leave the flash at an angle to the window and most of the light would bounce back. And I can't see anyone trying sticking their hand out the windows on the emergency doors at the end of the carriage!

I'd still like to see it :) I'll try and take a closer look next time. I know where to expect them, but i've never seen anything yet.

The pit is visible from the drivers cab on the Glasgow Underground DVD, but I can't get a capture of it as my copy is screwed up :-(

Ah, I remember them. Only 45p when I first came to Glasgow in 1990... Apart from a pint of beer, (and bus/rail transport in general, I guess) I am struggling to think of anything else that has more than doubled in price over the past 15 years.

On the subject of the "Retain Your Ticket for Inspection" has anybody ever been asked to produce a ticket whilst on a Glasgow subway train? I am so habitualised to not bothering to keep my ticket I always seem to end up in stuck whenever I'm in London (amongst other places) and have to beg to get let through the barriers at journey's end...

With all the changes coming up I wonder if Kelvinhall station will end up being renamed again.
Perhaps "Kelvingrove Museum" or similar, would be a better choice.

If you were to try get snaps of the pit or merkland st, I think you'd need a pretty good digital camera... you are travelling at speed and taking a picture of something almost pitch black... difficult for the camera to focus on

And yes, I have had my ticket inspected... many many years ago, I remember someone collecting them from everyone at hillhead underground, the days when they were half the width of current tickets and yellow in colour

All were scrapped except,

Car numbers.
1. Glasgow Museum of Transport.
2. Underframe retained for Perminant Way use.
4. Glasgow Museum of Transport (only half of it).
7. National Railway Museum.
10. Omnibus & Railway Museum, Brodick.
11. Underframe retained for Perminant Way use.
39. Glasgow Museum of Transport (rebuilt to original length trailer car).
41. Buchanian Street Subway Station (rebuilt to original length, and split in half lengthways).
55. Broomloan Road depot (restored).
The battery loco still survives at the Glasgow Museum of Transport.

Some were used as site huts, and stores, and then scrapped, six were sent to the Beamish Museum to be used as spares. Another was shipped to the Bridge Inn, at Ratho.
Probably the worst destruction of recent years was cutting surviving car No4 in half, and coverting it into a fake motor car (it was only ever a trailer car). This was done to fit into an available space at the Kelvin Hall.
