I think you're right about the east side of the street. The space between the 1st and 2nd floor windows is considerably more in the old photo so it must be a more modern buidling that stands there today.

Also it's strange to see the Subway Building not there in the old photo. The subway station building followed i think about 10 years later.

Very good photo comparison. I think the older one was probably taken at 4am on a mid summer morning. Either that or the old firm were playing that day.

Dunno if this particular picture has been done before?

Here's my effort anyway...

Hmmm?? Reckon if I'd stood behind the red MX5 I'd have been about spot on. Never mind!

I've got to say I was having an utterly boring night in tonight but decided to delve around this thread as well as Volume 1. Absolutely brilliant stuff and my greatest appreciation to all who have posted their "past & presents" on here! How have I managed to miss it before now???

Yes, I agree! Great thread this.

Here's my latest contribution...

Tobacco Merchant's House, 42 Miller Street

Image
c. 1970 (Virtual Mitchell)

Image

Restored by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust in 1995, this pretty little classical house is the last surviving tobacco laird's house left standing in the Merchant City. Badly altered and ruinous when the Trust acquired it, the restored building now provides a home for many of the City's leading architectural and amenity organisations including GBPT itself and the Scottish Civic Trust. Across the narrow wynd is the Italianate facade of the original Stirling Library by James Smith.

I thought that too! And look at the roof.....totally different!

It is a nice little building though!

I also went up Virginia Street with the intention of doing a Past-Present of this...

Image

It's changed so much I didn't bother really trying.
Found it hard to match ANY of the buildings in the picture although I'm sure most of the ones further up are still there.

Might have another try when I get the chance! If anyone else wants to have a go; fill your boots!

I did try! :)

The entire street is almost unrecognisable from the angle of the picture!

What amazed me was - where did the Virginia Galleries go?
I NOW know they pulled it down in 2003 - nobody told ME!! ::): B@st@rds! I used to spend hours kicking about that place. I'll never forget the foosty smell of old books and all the other interesting stuff. Anyone remember the war memorabilia place that used to sell gasmasks and Hitler Youth daggers and uniforms etc! It was a crazy place!

Okay, I'll have another go at that one at some point!

Here's another one I did...

Obviously a completely new roof on the building immediately to the right.....perhaps a fire at some point??? Or maybe just a new roof :D

There's an interesting area in the old shot where the 3 balconies are, the outer ones are flanked by what looks like walls, whereas the modern one has windows instead, It looks like the walls were in front of them then removed.

this presentation is in flash, but there are some classic Glasgow photographs.

http://www.zen49449.zen.co.uk/Glasgow/

Never understood why people use shitty flash, as people can still do a screen grab, and this is just the same as 'right-click, save as'.................
