ABANDONED & DISUSED RAILWAYS: Kelvingrove Tunnel

Postby jonno22 » Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:30 am

Hi all. I visited the 950 yards in length Kelvingrove Tunnel on Wednesday 17th June 09. The tunnel was part of the Glasgow Central Railway (Caledonian Railway) and ran between Stobcross (Finnieston / Exhibition Centre) - Kelvinbridge. The tunnel opened in 1896 and closed in 1964 as part of the 'Beeching - Axe'. I plan on revisiting the tunnel this saturday with a group of friends for more photographs. Full information as well as 28 photographs can be found here (28 Photographs attached below):

Inside Stobcross Depot Tunnel Includes Photographs Of The Oxidation and Cable Supports Still In Tact. A thing to notice / look out for is the height level of the concrete inside the tunnel (the tunnel is partly filled in. You can notice this by looking at the photograph showing the very small (not showing the whole) of the P - Way protection shaft).

Good photos as always. Just mind you don't have to start a new thread for each batch.

Myself and my friend were at the other end trying to take photographs and it was completely shit and water logged. About 30 yards into the tunnel it is ok(ish) and you need to walk slowly and steadily over these planks of wood until you can walk no more as there is water, I kid you not, 3ft + deep so both of us were not risking our lives attempting to find any safe way. There is also loads of toilet roll plus human shit to go with it including inside the water. The tunnel was very scary and obviously very stenchy and I do not often complain or give negative feedback about my walks I have done recently but this Tunnel is quite something. Is it Ok to walk at the other end?. Safe and easy to get into also? The tunnel all in all is 1330 yards long in length!!!. Quite fascinating stuff. It led to Parkhead stadium and then onwards to Carmyle. Any information on Bridgeton Cross station would be handy aswell as I am about to upload a gallery of images that I had taken last night. Show us your knowledge guys??? hehe. Plus I don't ask for much information but I aint too sure on this one.

i was there as part of my work.
entrance is behind turnstiles pub on london road, access via janefield street. security fence and locked steel door, so there is no chance of a 'casual wander' didnt go much beyond mauldslie street, its in pretty good repair, dry and only a little debris. i believe there are plans for it to be reopened for the games
