Aye the pic does look as if it came from an old phone Knightmare ::):

Spot on PPM thats it. My wee mate from the village - who was born on a local farm and has lived abouts the place for 50 odd years says its called Jean's hole - in his words;

"Jean's hole is dark, wet and awfy deep"

I don't fancy finding out, there's all sorts in there. That place has been a fly-tippers haven since Roman times. They used to travel down from the fort at Castlecary especially to dump their old chariot wheels n' stuff in there. There's a perfectly good municipal tip at Wardpark too! Bloody Romans - what did they ever do for us?

Anyway enough piffle-paffle!

After Jean's hole, what about these similarly named wells up near the old Palacerigg Railway line...
Jockey's Well and Toddle Well.
Icecube, ask your friend if he knows anything about them when you see him. I'm sure he will as I've heard them mentioned in various places quite a few times. Wonder who Jockey and Toddle were?
There's also Toddle Knowe (a small hill) about a half mile to the east, just the other side of Fannyside Road.

Image

The word under Toddle Well is CHALYBEATE. This is what Wikipedia says...

Early in the 17th century, chalybeate water was said to have health-giving properties and many people have promoted its qualities.

So it's an old well reputed to have health giving properties. Interesting!
I really need to get out more!! ::):

When you go to an old historical monument you normally have a board or plaque of information about the location

google pictures of what the fook i'm on about

the picture remidd me of a base of une of these interpretation boards.

Hope this helps if not then I give up

I'm know what you mean mrsam.

Don't think it's for that purpose though.

It's really old and made of iron and looks quite immovable. By that I mean it appears to have been built to take a great weight or withstand enormous force. It's also only about 2 to 3 feet tall.

You may be right though - I'm no Fred Dibnah!

The actual entrance is probably a lot bigger than it looks as the ground is deep with leaf litter. I don't know how far it goes in as on the two occasions I visited I never had a decent torch with me but I had my dog and was a bit worried he'd go in. Here is an extract of the 1919 OS edition for the area.

I've got some other pics taken a few months ago before the foilage made the remains almost invisible to a passing walker.
Amusing to think that the World Heritage site is polluted with pit bings and other sundry remains.

I know what you mean. Dogs can be a great cover for when you want to go snooping around but they can also get you into all sorts of bother. ::):

Be good to see those other pics if you get the chance.

I've been checking out this site the past few days. It's pretty much dedicated to tunnels and mines and all that sort of stuff we all love on here. Nothing on it about Glasgow though but hundreds of cracking stuff just the same.
I hope a link is okay...

You don't actually need the dog. All you need is a lead, a bonio and a worried expression

A large bottle of water and a dog's bowl in the boot completes the picture.

Here are a few more taken around Nethercroy below the Antonine Wall.

Bridge into a worked out massive quarry lying within yards of the wa'. Combine this one with the monster one south of the wa' next to the railway line its a wonder there is a wa' in these parts at all.
Image

A close up of the 'tunnel' - as close as I might get, you can never be sure just how safe the ground is around sealed mine shafts.
Image

Rather large concrete blocks which may have been part of the anchors for one of the pithead frames.
Image

More remains.
