It was a jetty built by the Romans to aid the unloading of supplies & equipment. There used to be a wee customs post at the tail end.

The Mersehead Bank form Sandyhills beach. You would be amazed at how for out the tide goes.

If you look at the FH size on Flickr you can make out the WWII bombing target on the horizon.
