Thank for that! And 4 maps duly ordered, including an Orkney one for my forthcoming holiday :)

A couple from Mondays trip to the Mull of Galloway. Windswept and beautiful it is. But god it was cold. On the upside the Lighthouse at the southmost tip is open to the public, and you can go up. The wonderful foghorn was pictured from the top. I waved at the Isle of Man, hello Jo :)

That's grand. I must go see it myself, at some point.

Sounds like Great Great (Great?) Grampa Pool had quite a career down here. Most places would be familiar to him still, it hasn't changed much! He'd have caught the wonder of the coming of the railways; which is the one sadly significant absence now. I wonder if he knew any of my ancestors...(in a non-professional way of course!)

Great, Great Grandfather Pool was born in Castle Douglas and his father is buried at Kelton Cemetary.

9 members of the family are buried at Johnstonebridge: http://thepoolfamilydatabase.20m.com/johnstone.htm

The names of Robert and David have been used in the family since 1755 and l am Robert David Pool as was my father. My brother Tommy has sons named Robert and David as l have no sons ( 3 daughters).

Our family has given over 150 years combined service to the Police force since the the mid 1800s. I know this all a bit boring but there you go.

Lucky Poet wrote:I was shown the most bizarre place I've seen in a long while: Corseyard Farm, a derelict folly-like dairy in the middle of nowhere. Locally known as Coo Palace, it must have cost an absolute fortune, being built to the highest standards in the Arts and Crafts style, mixed in with a slightly deranged Edwardian Gothic styling. Built shortly before the Great War for a wealthy Manchester shopkeeper named James Brown, it's worth a wee look, especially as it's now in the process of falling apart - the roof is coming undone, which is obviously doesn't bode well.

The whole thing, with the water tower rising above:

A wee bit closer. All boarded up now:

It was actually sunny:

The place is definitely in trouble now, structurally speaking:

There's a sad faded quality to the place:

This was for, uh, something:

Central courtyard:

The fanciest water trough I've seen in a while. Or ever:

It is still a beautifully detailed building. And built for cows, mind:

More details, though they're flagging a bit:

More wee details, this time on the gateposts:

This seems to have been a gateway to a wee pasture area. Built for bloody cows. The owner must have been off his nut:

On the way back to the road, this beautifully detailed wall lines the front of the property:

I came across this place yesterday, by chance. The photos I took are similar to yours, and surprisingly, the buildings don't seem to have deteriorated much more - on the surface at least. It is an amazing place, and so sad to see it crumbling away like this.

It's on the market just now, so if anyone's got the half million to buy it, and the rest to do it up...

Could be a timeless image if it weren't for the big yellow ear tags.
