Why is there no smoke coming out of the lums? Is it a smokeless zone? Was it a warm day? Somewhere in Rutherglen?

I wasn't aware of any area being smokeless, only smoke controlled.

It's not Chatlerhault House, it's not from my living room window, nor is it in Rutherglen.

It was a sunny day, smoke hasn't been seen through the lums in years, and it's not a domestic property.

Remember the old Hidden Glasgow saying: Look twice, maybe you missed something.....

Way back when the war against smoke from lums started the term used by the health freaks was 'smokeless zone'. True.

Perhaps back when the fight started but this is 2009 surely you should be aquinted with the correct terminology.

That's a tad unfair. The Clean Air Act (which introduced the 'smoke controlled' term) was in 1993, by which time the vast majority of homes in urban Scotland would have been using gas, electricity or oil as their heating source, and so by extension the number of householders affected would be minimal. As greatly opposed to the case at the introduction of the Clean Air Acts of 1956 and 1968.

Where would you expect people to have come in contact with the new terminology? It's not as if you get 'You are now entering a Smoke Controlled Area' signs.

When did they come into contact with the old propoganda *cough* sorry terminology. The West of Scotland (Apart from East Ayrshire) is totally smoke controlled. Given folk still have stove and appliances and cars and stuff a shops still sell ciggies the term smokeless is and has been redundant for decades

I take it you've never been to a barbeque or started the motor of a car or for that matter had heating that was run on gas. You'd be very surprised what you can burn in a smoked controlled zone, coal, wood etc infact there is a huge list which doesn't disallow an awful lot.

In East Ayrshire you can burn what you like but folk tend not to because us civilised people don't need intervention ;)
