Pirelli Southampton... I could've kicked myself

Postby germistonguy » Fri Jun 11, 2004 10:52 pm

Each time I visited Southampton I promised myself I would take a photo of what I assumed was cable storage towers; big round cicular structures a bit like gasometers.
Too late! Had a visit to Southampton today and the towers were in the middle of being demolished. I am coming to the conclusion that ANY building/structire over say 10 - 15 years old should be routinely photographed. I will try and find some photos of the original towers, but for now here is one in its final hour. I did not realise how big these were till I got to see them from the inside so to speak. I think this is where undersea cable would have been stored before being coiled onto ships (C.S. Iris ??) Anyone have any knowledge?

In the meantime, bang goes some more of Southampton's history. Southampton gets to look like 'new' Basingstoke everyday
