Orkney

Postby BTJustice » Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:01 pm

In 2006 myself and my Fiancee Joanne headed for Orkney in my van and it was a fantastic place. While I was there I took quite a lot of video and edited it up for family and friends when I got home but I have only just got round to re-editing it(it was too long to upload) and uploading it to You Tube.

Though some of you might be interested in seeing the video?

I will deffinately go back there and would recomend it to anybody.

Neat! Thanks for that, I must get myself up there some time. Sadly the furthest north I've been in the last 20 years is Aviemore (in the back of a transit van, stoned out of my gourd, but that's a long story). Those northern west coast roads look like great fun :)
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Ah, I knew this must have came up!

So, I have a week on Orkney in May to look forward to. Whereabouts should I be staying? North, south, east or west? (a holiday cottage will be getting booked, and there is a nice one on south ronaldsay, but would this just be painfully out of the way?)

The ancient stuff is a given for things to do, but are there any nice beaches, amazing walks, stunning views that I should know about? Any help welcomed :)

I will be watching your videos later BTJ :)

We were camping and as there was only one campsite when we went we didnt really have a choice.

We were based in Kirkwall and if you have a car when you go it dosnt really matter where you stay as everything is a short drive. By the end of the week we had travelled almost all the roads on the island, its a fabulous place.

Here are some pics;

We travelled from Gills bay, near John'o Groats which was a much cheaper ferry than the Aberdeen service.

Have a great time,

Dave.

Kirkwall is a pretty good base as its fairly central on the islands. There are loads of fantastic deserted beaches dotted all over , check out waulkmill bay for one. Good walks to be found also check out this site http://www.orkneyjar.com
Hope this is of some use.

I would recommend Stromness as a place to stay, I thought it was much nicer than Kirkwall and still had a good critical mass of pubs, shops and places to eat, great wee museum with a whole folder dedicated to the Orkney big brother winner, they are very proud of him! You can walk out of Stromness and be in the country side in 10mins. On Orkney as a whole, I was there a week and thoroughly enjoyed it, the mixture of prehistory and WW1&2 remains kept me well busy, could easly have spent 2 weeks there. Make time for the tomb of the Eagles which is a small privately run museum, not as big as Maes Howe but a great spot and I would recommend getting the ferry to Hoy, if you can go for the day and take a bike or a car, the museum on Hoy is great lots of relics from Scapa flow and not often you get an oil storage tank with a cinema inside! Get the times right and you get to call in at Flotta on the way back.

I do. He has had a troubled start to the year though, so not sure if he'll be making the trip to Orkney yet. Fingers crossed.

Orkney was wonderful. So much to see and do. It would have been nice it it wasn't freezing most of the time (one hot afternoon). But stone circles were circled, tombs were crawled into, and climbed down into, sunrises were enjoyed, timeless civilisations pondered, and whisky was drank in good company. Just lovely :)
