It was a bizarre spectacle, with people actually screaming and running forward when he got out of his pope mobile and started the chanting stuff. Also, amusing was the sizeable portion of the crowd who abandoned the squre at this point, presumably to go and do what they came to do, which was to take in the vast vatican art collection.



The most humiliating uniform ever designed?



The shops were well stocked with creepy babies



but happily more were stocked with pretty shoes. The vast numbers of designer shops was quite astonishing, oddly (unlike here) a walk along a street could see cheapo clothes shops sanwched between high end designer shops. All very ecclectic. A ver fashion conscious city. Or vain. Or image conscious, the women (the younger ones at least) were all imaculately turned out, pint sizes, size 8 cute little dollies

I'm off to Rome on 13th June and I can't wait! These pictures make the wait all the more unbearable! I've been once before, in 1991 on a bus trip with higher Latin, but the onus for us was on alcohol rather than classical architecture. We all got into trouble for drinking, but as I told my mother then..IT'S LEGAL TO DRINK AT 16 IN ITALY! Those teachers had no right to ground us in that hotel....

Those ruins look tremendous - I've got to go some day. (And agreed about the guy's uniform, though I wouldn't say it to his face.)

Was in Rome in February, two free Ryanair returns (£50 each for taxes) booked into a B&B near St Peters. Tip for anyone going, pack comfortable shoes, we walked everywhere. Rome is really an open air museum take a good guide book as well. I had wanted to go for a while and it lived up to expectation.
Another one crossed off the bucket list.

Me and my mate decided to go to Italy by train few years back. Didn't know where to go though. Took a map of Italy down the pub. Got steamin' and decided to go half way down the boot on the right hand side. So a few weeks later we did and ended up in a place called Pescara. We camped in a dog shit covered campsite and it was cold and rained every day. One day was spent sheltering under a concrete bridge and the next day in a cinema that showed porno movies. So much for our rich cultural experience. Eventually abandoned Italy and went back to Paris and spent time there instead.
