Great pics Peetabix.

Was watching programme recently about author of 'Rebus' books Ian Rankin and it showed various locations like
Worlds End pub and so on which had inspired some of his writing and also places used in filming series.
Like the Harry Potter books think he is planning on bringing character to an end. Never read them myself but like
tv series.

Thanks Dexter.
You are obviously more up-to-date than me. Might even read the book sometime as it feels like the end of an era.

To my great shame I've never read any of the books either; I'll try and get round to it. I've enjoyed what I've seen of the Ken Stott TV stuff. Anybody catch the programme Rankin did on Edinburgh? Worth catching on repeat if you haven't - the man's clearly in love with the city, and the Jekyll and Hyde type interpretation of the place. Oh, and James Hogg's 'Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner' is brilliant. (Just thought I'd mention it!)

I'm a big fan of American Crime novels and thanks to Glasgow city Libraies I have one on the go at all times. But I'd exhausted the American sock (or so i thought) and I picked up a rebus novle. Thats set me off to read them all. i haven't got to the last one and maybe I'll keep it till I've made sure i've read evry other one. Rankin is a good writer, there is a mix of mystery, policier, noir and music and comedy thrown in with a Scottish background. Mind you if you don't like crime novels you're left with stuff on family, relationships and a look round Edinburgh with a touch of politics.

I was reading the Obituaries when I discovered an American novelist I'd never heard of. James Crumley . I've order two novels held by the Libraries and anticipate a good read.

"A cross between Raymond Chandler and Hunter S. Thompson" sounds good to me :D . I'm not normally a crime aficionado, although I did like the stuff that - appropriately to the thread - Edinburgh's Payback Press put out. I might give the bloke a try.

I don't want to accidentally jinx anybody, but I've not heard of any North Bridge jumpers in a while. I saw the aftermath once: late 80s I guess, on a quick bike run from Uphall to the road round Arthur's Seat, via Market Street. A gaggle of passers-by strangely gesticulating at the bridge above then down at the pavement, a blanket covering something on the ground, and an ambulance crew chewing the fat (so to speak) by their vehicle and clearly not in much of a hurry... Oops.

In that spirit of, uh, good cheer, here are yet more shots...

Here's some more...

Glamorous by-pass:
Image

Possibly the crappest building in all Edinburgh, being New St Andrew's House. The popular reaction to the flattening of St James's Square for this piece of asbestos-ridden shite goes a long way to explaining why central Edinburgh was left relatively intact after the 60s and 70s urban regeneration fad had passed. A security guard chased me away after taking these :( :
