ICI Ardeer - Nylon Plant

Ah! I was thinking along the lines of the biggest "explosives factory" as distinct from the biggest "munitions factory". Ardeer for the most part was set-up in 1872 to cater to the mining industry. Here's an article from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald mentioning the program:

My grandfather was a crewmember of one of the ICI vessels that transported munitions to Greenock from Ardeer during the war.
Retired doon the Watter in Australia.

Left school and worked as a Laboratory Apprentice in Roche, Dalry and now plough my trade as a Production Manager for Ciba Specialty Chemicals in Paisley.

Search for Ciba Geigy in Scran and there are 3 film clips of one of the plants I'm now responsible for!!

And no, I'n not in them. I'm guessing they're around 18yrs old.

Hi, sorry to resurrect this thread but I have an interest in it.

I was wondering if anyone has any other pictures or plans of the Nylon plant either during operation or decommissioning phase?

The reason I ask is that my father was an operator in the ammonia facility(large sphere that sat next to the Largs - Glasgow railway line) and for the past 8 years I have been working for a company which occupies buildings which were the canteen and kitchens for the plant.
I had a quick scout "over the fence" this afternoon and the area of derelict land is amazing.

This looks like an earlier ariel photograph on Microsoft Maps

This seems to be more up to date on Google Maps, you can see the fertiliser mounds on what was the massive circle in the above link.(There is a council facility there now and I can see the mounds out of the office window.)

Any information that anyone can provide will be gratefully received.
Thanks.

There's a nice panoramic photo of the Nylon Works under construction in McSherry's Old Stevenston book, and there's a photo of the 'sphere' building you mentioned here, taken in the late 80s. I vaguely remember seeing the sphere as late as the early 90s, I assume they demolished it around the same time the remaining big tower came down (1994?).

this site is now owned by NPL Estates, and I have been dealing with them at work. They have grand plans for the area. Hopefully, I'll somehow be able to blag a visit with a camera before the buldozers move in.

More details can be gotten from here:
