Buchanan's Garage, Dalreoch around 1980. Remember the days when petrol prices were in imperial and metric? at 42p a litre, petrol was about half of what it is now - whereas whiskey was then £4.15 a bottle and is more than twice that now. Motoring has indeed become cheaper. Tennant's lager was 23 1/2p, a quarter of what it is now, but wait for it - 20 Lambert and Butler were 55p. Dalreoch Garage was, for long, John Buchanan and Son, harking back to the founder. Before becoming a filing station they specialised in leyland cars - Austin, MG and Wolseley. In 1977, Walter Buchanan retired and his son Gordon became part of a Mazda agency, but this was short lived and the BP filing station took over. Beyond the garage is the truncated spire of Dalreoch church, which had been a vacant charge for over ten years at this time, and was later demolished to make way for, almost inevitably, private housing.
In 1873 the new parish of Dalreoch was established from the West Bridgend area of Cardross parish and the new church was opened in May of that year. This building was sited about 300 metres from the then Bridgend Church and the two co-existed for many years. In 1967 the minister accepted a call to Kilbirnie and, under a Presbytery plan for four areas of Dumbarton, Dalreoch was refused permission to call a minister to full charge. The church then became an extended vacancy despite the protests and appeals of the Congregation. This situation lasted until April 1984 when the union of Dalreoch and Bridgend Churches to form Dumbarton West Kirk finally came about. Worship in future would be held in the former Bridgend Church. Before the Dalreoch building was demolished, many items were removed for use in other churches and, of course, there are items included within the present building. These include a memorial tablet to a former minister and memorial stained glass windows. The site of the church is now occupied by a small housing development
