The Old Speke Airport, Liverpool

I am down in Liverpool for a couple of days and staying in the Marriott Hotel at Speke. It is the old 1930's Art Deco airport building and they have done a pretty good job in restoring it, both inside and out. The airport building and two hangers are Grade II listed. One of the hangers is a David Lloyd Health club and they seem to be working on the other at the moment.

The hotel itself seems to be pretty much intact, including control tower. They have a load of old transport posters in the lobby (BOAC etc.). There is also a fantastic viewing terrace on the roof, which you are not supposed to access (Health and Safety - apparently they are not allowed to alter the railings because of the listing) but I obviously ignored the 'maintenance only' signs and went up for a look. You get a great view over the Mersey estuary, North Wales hills and the planes landing and taking off at the new airport.

Would definitely recommend it for anyone coming down this way.
