This site makes for some interesting reading to see how Historic Scotland looks after one of its sites in a famous location. Pity they're a quango, so can't be compared to the council

The website seems to be a bit old now, and a number of links are dead, but you can still read about things like the proposed sewage dumping from 200,000 annual visitors direct into Loch Ness and how a Park & Ride was rejected by HS when proposed by locals, but supported when the authorities pushed it through later.

There used to be a webcam overlooking the castle and loch, and I never gave it a thought when it disappeared a few years ago, now I know why.

Tourism is good for the economy, but when it's localised
in small villages, can be damaging. Drumnadrochit used
to nice when I was a kid, too tacky now and as for
Tyndrum or Fort Bill, that's a vision for the future

I visited Urquhart Castle last summer 2 adults 1 child didn't get much change from £20. The whole thing was very glossy and too clinical for my liking. The castle itself looks like a replica when you get up close due to the extensive renovation work.
But it coins it in as a 'must see' tourist trap and provides jobs for the local economy where tourisim is the main employer.

Personally the whole Loch Ness thing is a bit of an anti-climax. Loch Lomond is far more picturesque in my book not too mention a hundred and one other places on the west coast.

Yeah castle stalker, it's been years since I was there.
Have taken several hundred photos of castles over the
years and was going to put them up on a website. Perhaps
get around to it at some point.

Yeah as your were saying once you start leaving
Loch Lomond and start heading north, local people need
tourism, more so now since a lot of traditional crafts
and trades are dying out and young
people are heading for the cities to find work.

I love Inverness/Loch Ness. I tend to go for the non-tourist places...there is far more interesting places, at little cost. Dores is a fab place, and if you get the chance visit Foyers, this is where the infamous Aleister Crowley used to have his house...Jimmy Page now owns it (howver he says he sold it!!...keeps weird folk away from it)

Mustardman, the house changed ownership in 1991.
Been past the place a few times, when staying in

According to several locals that live in the area, Jimmy Page still owns it. The "changed hands", is to deter nutters visiting it. Jimmy doesn't live there though.....however, he owns the most artifacts belonging to Crowley than any other person

Wonder if he still owns that bookshop as well, since like
myself Page has acquired a varied collection of reading
materiel. Crowley's not my bag, don't like folk that harm
