Just back from a week in Venice and the place was amazing. I have only posted pictures from the flight there and the first evening on flickr and will be posting more over the next week or so.

Hopefully my pictures do the place justice. it really is an amazing looking place.

Coming in to land;

We took the Alilaguna boat from the airport to the city to do the grand entrance and it was well worth it as this is where we got off;

Didnt arrive until 6 pm so by the time we had dealt with the hotel and got un packed it was dark outside;

Image

In the picture above our hotel is the low pink building on the right, just past the bridge and our room looked out onto the canal so it didnt matter that the TV only had Italian channels, there was plenty of entertainment from the window;

is a cracker. Just lovely.

PS does the place smell a bit funny like they say?

Cheers LP. We only noticed a funny smell twice and both times we were beside very quiet wee back waters and even then it was no worse than a strong seaweed smell. Can't speak for the summer, might be worse in the heat.

We had a great visit there and we had both sorts of weather hot/sunny and wet / windy. Walking around the place flooded ha ha . I took about 2,000 pics you cannot miss just so much to see. Only downer was cost of spending a penny. :)

Thanks for sharing these, folks. My first visit to Venice was in 2004 and it was love at first sight! A truly amazing place.

Not at all. Aside, I wonder if Venice would look half as nice if it wasn't slightly crumbling? It's that faded grandeur thing.

The crumbling and decay really added to the feel of the place but was slightly spoilt by the graffitti. One of the prettiest cities in the world and still people feel the need to badly paint their name on the walls.

Anyhoo, some more pics;

Squero Tramontin. I got some really nice gelato at a place just opposite that and ate it sitting on the wall by the canal, watching the men polish gondolas. I've had worse afternoons.

I don't mind the Venetian graffiti so much - it shows there is still a tiny bit of youthful life in the place. What I really didn't like the last time I went is the way the current mayor has approved enormous advertisments covering loads of otherwise really beautiful parts of the city.

We did the same, bought gelato from the wee shop on the corner beside the bridge (I had strawberry, Jo had Tiramasu flavour) and sat beside the church in the sun.
