It seems Madiba has taken a turn for the worse. He's an old man and I wish him no more suffering.

Few who were there will forget the day Mandela danced in the Square.

He can't last forever. What a lovely photo, though.

I'm old enough to remember the disgraceful output of the Federation of Conservative Students in the 1980's:
"Hang Nelson Mandela" badges. What a bunch they were. Don't let their successors sully NM's legacy .

Ian Davison's song

We'd sung about him for years,
And there were speeches everywhere.
But I'll never forget the cheers,
When Mandela danced in the square.

When Nelson came to Glagow, after all his pain,
Ten thousand people met him, and listened in the rain.
The big umbrellas folded, and many heads were bare.
But every face was shining, when Mandela danced in the square.

We'd sung about him for years,
And there were speeches everywhere.
But I'll never forget the cheers,
When Mandela danced in the square.

When Nelson talked of duty, you could feel us hold our breath,
We were just a bit uneasy, when Nelson talked of death,
And when he talked of trouble, there was tension in the air,
But we faced the future smiling, when Mandela danced in the square.
We'd sung about him for years,
And there were speeches everywhere.
But I'll never forget the cheers,
When Mandela danced in the square.

When Nelson came to meet us, we made our feelings clear.
We heard the songs and speeches, and we clapped and stamped and cheered.
We heard of peace, and justice, and the freedom that we share,
But we shook the City Chambers, when Mandela danced in the square.

We'd sung about him for years,
And there were speeches everywhere.
But I'll never forget the cheers,
When Mandela danced in the square.

Well, Nelson came to Glasgow, to show us he was free,
The greatest man in Africa, and gave us his decrees,
A giant with a suit and tie, and sober face and hair,
But the welcome seemed to move him and Mandela danced in the square.

We'd sung about him for years,
And there were speeches everywhere.
But I'll never forget the cheers,
When Mandela danced in the square.

Ooh, great song! :D And it was a great day, although I seem to recall it being dreich and rainy but that didn't matter at all. I've just realised - it's not at all often one goes to join a big load of people in the Square to be happy - more often to protest that things are wrong. :)

Oh well, it seems that his end is nigh. Very sad. I hope he will be allowed to go in peace, surrounded by his family.

Though I agree completely with your sentiments VT the final sentence can be used against many people or groups. Some of those who supported Rose Gentle's brave campaign have a long and recorded history that show their sudden concern regarding welfare of British Service Personnel was no more than sickening political opportunism. Similarly George Galloway has regularly highlighted a similar hypocrisy regarding the appointment of John Reid to the Secretary of State for Defence.

As for sullying Mandela's legacy there are a fair number of Daily Mail online posters who seem happy to do this now. It's the same trolls who would post similar bile whether the ailing person was the Queen, Pope or US President but it is a sign of a sick mind.

Thanks for pointing that out IM. There was no need for that last sentence of mine. It doesn't make a lot of sense in the cold light of day.

Always wondered what happened to the wee girl he did that dance with; I wonder is she even remembers him. I suppose a quick Google search could bring an answer. Reason I don't is that it would break my heart to find is she had become some sort form of casualty to our societies and wonderful city's many ailments.

I remember the moment was highlighted (read plugged) in the councils' own video release of that day.
