The Hebrides

Postby Sharon » Wed Oct 06, 2010 4:00 pm

Sifting through some photos after a wonderful weeks holiday on the very pretty Barra. The beaches in particular were amazing, with white sand, big blue waves, the clearest water you've ever seen and totally deserted. Perfect.

View from the cottage we stayed in, this looks out over the beach that doubles as an airstrip. Pics from the Barra to Benbecula flight may follow. It was also...amazing.

btw, the water is NEARLY that colour, but not quite, something seems to have gone wacky in creating the jpg...colour management is a yet unmastered skill *sigh* gin time.

Never taken that flight but have flown into Barra from Glasgow and that was pretty damn impressive too. Never had a flight like it! Landing on the beach is pretty special too. The beach over the dunes by the airport is stunning too (Eoilgarry, or something like that).

Looking at the pic from the pane again - it that Vatersay you're passing over? Some of the beaches on that tiny little island were unbelievable!

Man, I need to get back out to the Islands more often.... That horse pic is brilliant too.

Lovely photos Sharon. I still recall the week I spent on Barra and the Uists and can appreciate the feelings of those who left those beautiful and lonely islands as expressed in the Canadian boat song

From the lonely sheiling of the misty island,
mountains divide us and a waste of seas,
yet still the blood is strong
the heart is highland,
and in my dreams I behold the Hebrides

An odd little collie who adopted us and took us on what must be one of his regular walks! He ran on ahead as we followed behind, handy as he showed us where to get on and off the beaches.

Wonderful photo, I had two holidays on Barra some 30 odd years ago, still remember them as if it were yesterday, god, the stories I could tell. I'll make the effort to return next summer I think.
Did you get to the top of Heaval?

Great dog photo, btw.
