Balloch Pier Station

Postby The_Clincher » Sun Oct 16, 2005 11:38 pm

Hi folks....i'm looking for pics only please (if possible) of Balloch Peir Station in use. I used to go to Balloch by train a lot when i was young, when the train went over the level crossing at Balloch Central. I used to watch the train then fade off into the distance (to Balloch Pier) when i was wee...i loved it. I know before i went (late 70's early 80's) folk would have been lucky enough to continue the journey up to Balloch Pier to get on a boat (prob Maid of the Loch) in those days.

Any pics of the old Balloch Peir Station would be appreciated..along with any memories/stories you have....thanks!!! :)

There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is generally adopted.

Could someone explain to this young one about this station...

The current Balloch station wasnt the end of the line? The line crossed the road and went right up to the Loch?

Unless that's a particularly large puddle the "Maid of the Loch" is in, yeah ;)

Thanks for the pics.

I've always wondered about the little building and the construction of the road leading to the pier where the Maid is currently berthed. Now I know why it looks the way it does :)

Yes. Those last two pictures are the original Balloch Central, which is now
a tourist information building or summat. The services to Balloch Pier on the
old SPT map said something like 'Summer Service Only.' It looks like it was
just a single line down to the pier as well.

Nice view of both stations from the air...

The track plan as at electrification can be found at http://homepages.enterprise.net/iainlogan/railway/gsetk.html. The branch was reduced to single track on 11/03/73.
The pier station closed on 28/09/86, (303068 worked the last train). The re-sited Balloch Central station opened 24/04/88 on the other side of the level crossing

A map showing the rail infrastructure in the area. Note that the opening date for the second Balloch station should be 1986 not 1886.
