There is a legend which tells how Erskine got its name. During the Danish raids a young warrior cut off the head of the Danish leader. He impaled it on a stake and, with the battlecry "head on a knife" or "Eris Kyne" he fought fiercely, brandishing his trophy. The defenders carried the day. After the battle, in true legendary fashion, the King granted the warrior the land he had defended and changed his surname to Erskine.
