Re: Uplifting Items

The charities which gratefully accept large furniture items and uplift for free, in my experience, are
The Salvation Army,
Chest, Heart and Stroke
and British Heart Foundation - and there will be others...

Sorry, no telephone numbers to hand, but they are all in the book.

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

No need to apologise, Gaucho...........

So Ronnie knows why it is there.... I'll PM him.

Meanwhile Bobby has got me thinking, either the 1911 theory or perhaps more recently (comparatively) , the 1938 Bellahouston Exhibition?

Bet when we find out it is a forehead-slapping moment! ::):

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

I've checked the coats of arms for the following Banks so far and none of them match; RBS, Clydesdale, Union Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland, British Linen. Good thinking, Bobby.... worth a look. Surely the Lord Lyon would prevent the use of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom as used in...

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

No pressure, then..........!! ::):

I have been checking the PO directories (and thanks again for them!), but so far nothing conclusive. Was that part of Paisley Road West originally Paisley Road only? Must get the old maps out............

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

Thanks, Bobby - running out of options here!

I'm afraid to contact Glasgow District Council about this, because they may say "Who the heck put that there?", and take it down!!

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

Gaucho, that link is to Wiki for the Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland, not the Royal Bank of Scotland, and it is the same place I got the Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland from. Vinegar Tom, - Thank you for that lovely, clear photo. I had seen the coat of arms as I passed by on a bus and hadn't been able...

Re: Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

I have looked at the Coat of Arms and I am pretty certain it is not of a bank, but that they are the Royal Arms of Scotland. I have checked my Glasgow architecture books, the Kinning Park history book, Villages of Glasgow, Second City etc.; also various walks books - and asked my friend, who leads w...

Coat of Arms at 27 Paisley Road West

I'm looking for a bit of help here. I have searched the forums and can't find any mention. I like doing research on various aspects of Glasgow and this one has me stumped. At the first floor of the tenement at the corner of Paisley Road West and Stanley Street (27 Paisley Road West), there is a very...

.... or GlasgaKeelies http://glesgakeelie.proboards.com/

They may be able to help with the living relatives and some Family History hints.

Good Luck. :)

Re: Cowcaddens memories

Lucy, a book to read to learn a bit about Cowcaddens is 'Tales of the Savoy' by Joe Pieri. His family ran the Savoy Cafe for many years (1931 - 1971) and his book celebrates the area and the characters who populated it.

Re: Great Fire/flood???

I was in the Britannia Panopticon for Doors Open Day and a visitor was discussing a great flood in the Saltmarket with the woman who worked there, apparently it resulted in many deaths and required 1 side of the Saltmarket to be built again from scratch. Anyone have any more info as I can't find an...
