Re: Tower Block Demolitions - Rolling Updates!

Apropos the YMCA / David Naismith Tower blowdown in October - there is another 'first' worth remembering. The roof of this block was the location of Glasgow's very first cellular (mobile phone) base station. It required the lifting of a pre-built portacabin containing all the electronics by crane. ...

Re: Where is Glasgow?

If you're filling your address in on one of these online forms, "Glasgow" isn't usually an option for county if its a pro-forma drop down box. If it's an empty box, I always put Glasgow. From my limited knowledge of conveyancing documents, the area is technically known as "the County ...

Re: Glasgow tenements red stone ot blonde/

I had always understood that the blonde sandstone was used in earlier built tenements/buildings and the red sandstone started coming in late 19th century/early 20th. I can only assume it was down to cost.

Re: Danger from old mines and mineshafts

Back in the 80s, when we were looking for a flat to buy in the West End, we had 3 or 4 mortgages refused in the Hillhead area because of the risk of subsidence from mining. However subsequently those flats have been sold - whether some work has been done to stabilise them or whether mortgage lender...

Re: Danger from old mines and mineshafts

My grandparents used to live in Shafton Place in Knightswood. In one of the drying greens at the back of the flats beside the shops on Shafton Road, there was a fenced off square portion, probably around 10' x 10'. As kids, we'd jump over the fence and jump on this grassy square to be amused by the ...

Re: Leaning tower of Glasgow

I wouldn't want to attempt to date this photograph, but it's clearly long before the demolition of the Grand, and the fountain certainly looks like it has its distinctive lean back then.

Re: Glasgow or is it Glazgow... what is it to you?

Definitely Glazgow or Glezga. I can understand that through other regional dialects "GlaSgow" comes through, but "Glezgie" is just a mickey take that no one I know that comes from the city has said, ever!

Re: Tower Block Demolitions - Rolling Updates!

He seems to be someone who places too much faith in his spelling checker. ::): Or, given that he doesn't seem to like apostrophes and does seem to like Amercanised spelling, perhaps he's just silly. Come to think of it, isn't he a lawyer by profession? If so, he shows a worrying lack of attention t...

Re: Knightswood & Anniesland

I know in about 1980 the B & Q site was a Vantage shop, which was also DIY. Anyone remember the massive black square in one of the back gardens around Friarscourt Avenue which was used, I was always led to believe, as a sight testing for Barr & Stroud? Looked a bit like an oversized basketba...
