Re: What Are You Currently Reading

One of the best of those officer class first world war memoirs, but I think it is pipped by Edmund Blunden's Undertones of war. Both great reads though. I've not read Blunden's book, though I have heard of it, must try and get a hold of a copy. I have read both books and they are excellent. Of cour...

Re: Building on Swanston Street

I think this is an old cotton spinning mill, built in the 1880's for the Glasgow Cotton Spinners Co. Ltd.

Re: random question

I live on the Isle of Bute and I've had two phone calls so far from SNP canvassers. Their campaigning is going hell for leather here. Politely declined to answer their questions anyway. I am neither a Nationalist nor an SNP supporter.

Re: An extinct job?

A ticket writer was somebody who drew by hand the signs or "tickets" in shop windows which displayed the prices of the goods on sale.

Re: An extinct job?

Almost certainly Lappet or Lappit Cutter. If I'm not mistaken this relates to an entry in the 1861 Census covering a woman called Jannet Urie living at 35 Alston St. in Grahamston along with her husband and 3 children. I looked up the actual census record - as usual the handwriting is obscure but it...

Re: Robin Williams, Dead....

I'm sure he was very funny and that (although I ever took to his manic brand of humour myself) but the coverage has been disproportionate. When was the last time anyone here mentioned Robin Williams in conversation? Or did you ever in your life? Now Lauren Bacall, that's a different matter. Yes, I ...

Re: A Greek Tragedy

Just been reading that the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Dumbreck is a Thomson design: In 1896 John Morrison, a respected contractor of the time, built a baronial villa for himself in Pollokshields, namely, Sherbrooke Castle, designed by Alexander “Greek” Thomson. The house became a hotel just before ...

Re: Number 44 bus in the 1960s

Trying to find out what the destination a 44 bus would have shown in the 1960s going to the south side of Glasgow. Page 32 of http://www.govanhistory.org.uk/docs/Essay.pdf shows one but cant make it out, possibly Langside or Cathcart. Thanks It went from Anniesland to Langside (Battlefield Monument...

Re: Subway today

Lucky Poet wrote:Does anybody know when that signage was put up, though? I'd had it in mind it was from a mid to late-90s improvement.

Early 90's I seem to remember. According to the ticket clerk on duty at Cessnock this afternoon it's been removed permanently. Doesn't fit in with the new image apparently.

Re: Am I the only one?

Yet another fat-arsed cretin on a pushbike nearly ramming me from behind on a public footpath. Flashed past me with about a quarter of an inch to spare, just about bringing on a cardiac arrest. This is happening nearly every day now. They are everywhere, on pavements and in public parks – an in you...
