Highburgh Road

Afternoon, all.

Unless I'm being a spacker of the highest order, I can't seem to find many historical photos of Highburgh Road near its intersection with Byres Road.

Can anyone help?

Cheers,

TC

Re: [The] Curlers [Rest], Byres Road

Cheers for the information, lads.

I've become useless at navigating the NLS map section, but I'm assuming there must be an historical OS map showing the rink which adjoined the pub.

[The] Curlers [Rest], Byres Road

Anyone know where the curling pond associated with this pub was located?

Re: Plinth on Elderslie St./Claremont Gdns?

There's a pic of that location taken from Berkeley Street in 1955 on http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=681&p=23575&hilit=+elderslie#p23575 The thread's locked so I can't quote it here. There's definitely something below the street signs. Is it a pillar box? Yep, T...

Plinth on Elderslie St./Claremont Gdns?

You can't make it out on Google Streetview, but there's a decent-sized stone plinth with evidence of two metal supporting struts at this junction, just down from Park Circus. Anyone know what used to appear on this plinth? http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b204/timchilli/plinth1.png

Re: BBC Queen Margaret Drive

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know what's happening with the old BBC site? I'm considering a short-term let of a flat on Hamilton Drive but don't really want to be there when all the construction work is kicking off. Any idea when it's due to start?

Cheers

Water on QVD?

Morning, all. A small part of the road on Queen Victoria Drive collapsed over the weekend, and water has been discovered under the road. Today I hear that engineers have taken samples of the water and have determined that it is natural spring water. Can anyone point me in the direction of old maps s...

UFO

On Christmas day around midnight I was driving home from the south side and saw four orange orbs hovering in the sky. The orbs were large and seemed to flicker when they moved. I'm pretty sure these were Chinese lanterns, but wanted to be sure. A couple I know of mentioned that they'd seen similar l...

Re: Last Famous Person You Saw On The Streets Of Glasgow was...

Shook hands with Princess Di in Garnethill circa 1994. Met Muhammad Ali at a book signing in Waterstones (Ca'do'ro) around 1992. Said "alright?" to Billy Connolly in the Ashoka, Ashton Lane a couple of years ago. Saw Eric Stoltz in Glasgow airport back in 2000. For any lads who enjoyed a b...

Date ideas

I may have asked this before, but times change... I'm struggling to think of any decent ideas for "dates" in Glasgow... I've done the comedy club, drinks/clubbing, restaurants, day trips, etc. to death, and am wondering if anyone's prepared to share their little gems you use to woo/spend t...

Re: Past Present Vol 2

Couple of photos of Ashton Lane requiring a present-day comparison photo. Looks like the car reggie is from about 1967, but I may be wrong, so I'll defer to any car historians out there. Looks to me like this could've been taken sometime in the early 80s/late 70s. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b...

Re: Toilet facilities

Wonder what they'll do with the ironwork from the old Glasgow Cross Station now that the St Vincent Street shit-lockers are to be closed. Hope they're preserved somewhere.

Also wonder where all the "gentlemen" will relocate to... I don't wonder too much, incidentally.

Re: House deeds

I handle old Sasine title deeds on a regular basis and I'm continually amazed at how little effort is made to maintain these deeds in good condition. I mean, I've seen 18th century deeds rammed into cardboard folders, folded into oblivion, crumpled up and shoved in the back of a file, etc. An ignomi...
