Interesting to learn about the early iron boxes in Glasgow - anyone know who made them - I assume they are all lost. I always thought it was weird that Glasgow had more foundries than any other UK city but the y had concrete boxes, Edinburgh had CI ones made at Saracen and Carron. A friend of mine h...

Old Fruitmarket

Great structure - built in 1853 by the Glasgow company of Robertson and Lister who manufactured wrought and cast iron buildings, and shipped them all over the world.

I know it is a nightmare when the lamposts themselves are Listed for their architectural significance, and then moved around - makes it difficult to find em !!!!!

I think the plan is to refurbish the bridge at some point.

Useless information - the Albert heads are cast iron but were originallt 'bronzed' - must have looked quite impressive.

Ironwork

The railings were made by George Smith and Co's Sun Foundry which was based in Kennedy Street. I think the work is being done by Heritage Engineering - a Glasgow firm who do windmills, watermills, locomotives and ironwork all over the world !

As I understand it it started as a 'voluntary' PR effort, then became obligatory unless you could justify it for safety reasons. They were supposed to leave a run of samples for reference, but often did not. Many folks put them back after the war, but many did not. I have been told of the low grade ...

Thanks Ronnie - the NAS have some notebooks and some legal records - GUAS records are a bit misleading - they don'y have any production records as stated - they do have soem price lists etc. I think I might try a general appeal in the paper. Thanks - I have been through the Mitchell with a fine toothcomb - they have a couple of 7th Edition catalogues and a 6th I recall. There must be some stuff floating around out there from folks who worked in the foundry in it's last years.......
