Re: Police Museum to close

Hi Folks, At long last I have had an opportunity to read your kind words about the closure of the Glasgow Police Museum on 11 November 2008 and our departure from our 'spiritual home' (the Old Central Police Office building) on 8 December 2008. When the Scottish Courts Service realised the cost of u...

Re: March Street Polis Station.

Hello Catriona, The March Street Police Office was used until 1893 when the Craigie Street Police Office was opened. The monogram 'R.C.P' means 'Renfrew County Police' who policed the area until 1891. There is another old police station in Govanhill. It is the former Belleisle Street Police Office w...

Old Partick Police Station

The Partick Police Office in Anderston Street was built around 1858, the year that the Partick Burgh Police was established. It was the Hq of the force until Partick was swallowed up by Glasgow in November 1912. The force then became a 'L' (Partick) Division of the City of Glasgow Police. This conti...

Police Boxes

Hi David,
As far as I know, the cast iron hexagonal boxes, used as Police Signal Boxes in 1891, were made at McFarlane's Iron Works in Glasgow. They were the boxes that were actually exported to Paris as toilets.
Hope this helps.

Hi Folks, The planning application to site a police box at 163 Argyle Street, Glasgow, is in fact by Strathclyde Police for a new style police box filled with hi-tech equipment to communicate with their Pitt St. HQ. I understand it will be in a stainless steel finish with a touch-screen syste...

Police Boxes

Hi Folks, The concrete and wood Police boxes that have been preserved at various locations throughout the City were installed between 1932 and 1938, to extend the old system. Previously, the first Police boxes in Glasgow (and reputedly in the UK) were designed in 1891 by Fire Engineer Eggar of Glasg...

Infamous People

Hi James, The Maryhill Barracks guardhouse is the building in grey/black sandstone just inside the barracks wall. There's a pedestrian entrance to the housing estate known as (funnily enough) 'The Barracks', immediately opposite the police office. Go in the entrance and the building on your left is ...

Hello Tim, We spoke today at the Glasgow Police Museum. It would be good if we knew someone who has seen the cells under the fruit market..........certainly the old Central Police Office (1825-1906) would be an explanation. Police Lane was the lane separating the police station from the City Halls o...
