Shawlands Arcade

I can still recall visiting Shawlands Arcade in Glasgow Southside in the late 1960s and thinking 'wow this is modern city living at it best'. It's now a seedy dilapidated quarter. Even my namesakes Harkins the jewellers has gone... and now one of those cloned anodyne Weatherpersons pubs is it 'best'...

Glasgow Film Theatre GFT

Interesting wee blogpiece on the recent internal makeover at the GFT - one of Glasgow's surviving gems from the 1930s. https://www.ads.org.uk/glasgow_filmtheatre_blog/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=February%20Newsletter&utm_content=February%20Newsletter+CID_01b726cb1893c9e9d1a8feb704b930ff&a...

Old Meat Market Regen, part good, part disappointing news?

Doubtless it's good news that the becalmed regeneration of the remaining old meat market sites in Dennistoun will be restarted. But isn't it a tad dismaying that a giant UK wide Housing Association with a group in Scotland has been selected by Glasgow City Council to lead on it? I'm not meaning to b...

Social Enterprise in Scotland week - Glasgow 2- 8 Sept '19

Not sure where was best to post this. A wide range of talks, demos, exhibitions etc. being put on in Glasgow as part of the Social Enterprise in Scotland week 2 to 9 September. Emphasis is very much on practical stuff on what people are doing and creating. (BTW for those who are not familiar with it...

Re: Whiskies a gone-gone

Toby I’ve only now just chanced on your excellent work in this thread. Can you maybe help me with a bit of a historical puzzle? I've recently moved to the board of our local housing association, Rutherglen & Cambuslang. As part of the lore of local spoken history I found there, I've heard mentio...

Singer Factory Clydebank

Appreciate that it's not truly 'Glasgow' but an awful lot of Glasgow people did work at the Singers factory in Clydebank. Researchers working on a project called “After the Factory” want to interview people who worked in the sewing machine factory that closed in 1980. Anyone who is interested in sha...

Sauchiehall Street after GSoA fire.

In the aftermath of the Glasgow School of Art fire, large tracts of Sauchiehall Street as well as Argyle Street now looking seedy and rundown if not actually distressed. Does not bode well for 'retail destination' Glasgow?

Re: Nuclear war in Glasgow

I recently watched a dated (early 60's?) black and white British 'gangster' film on the talking pictures channel. What fascinated me was how much stuff was relayed in code for 'those in the know' about what was then really going on in society - but that film producers dared not openly portray. One g...

Re: Nuclear war in Glasgow

An incidental return visit to this board and seeing this post prompts a few comments from me. There are some declassified UK Government papers released several (many?) years ago that are revealing about the Cold War and Glasgow’s prominence as a USSR target for nuclear obliteration. Seems that metro...
