Head in Ruskin Lane

Has anyone noticed this little head in Ruskin Lane? I think it was at the back of No.35.

The Martyr's Pillar, Maryhill Old graveyard

A memorial to trade union martyr, George Millar, was erected in the graveyard of Maryhill Old parish church, following his murder during a strike at Dawsholm Print Works in 1833. An iron monument with a bronze plaque recorded the event and when the fire-damaged church was being demolished, the Counc...

Gartnavel Royal - stone heads

Gartnavel_head2.JPG
Gar.JPG

There are at least six stone heads carved over the doorways of the old Gartnavel Royal building (the side overlooking Bingham's Pond). Each head is very different and I wondered if anyone knew who is depicted?

Kelvingrove Park - Chalybeate spring

Along the riverside path from the Dumbarton Road entrance, at the rhodedendron and azalea garden, are the remains of a cast iron drinking fountain set into the wall and bordered by a low iron railing. It is sadly dilapidated and overgrown with brambles. It is believed to have been formerly associate...

Re: Another lost river - the Glasgow Burn?

Thank you for your reply - I have discovered it was also called St Enoch's Burn, and that it flowed on the western boundary of the village of Grahamston. It now flows underground close to Mitchell Street before passing under Argyll Street en route to the Clyde. I wonder where it rises?

Another lost river - the Glasgow Burn?

Can anyone give information about Glasgow's other underground waterway, which appears on old maps as 'Burn called Glasgow'? It empties into the Clyde near Custom House Quay and the exit pipe tends to be covered at high tide. It runs north to south as far as 'Meikle Cowcaldanes' (Glasgow City map 154...

Lumsden Model Dwelling, 13 Roslin Place, St George's Cross

Please can anyone tell me about the Lumsden Model Dwelling which existed at 13 Roslin Place in 1871? I had thought that model lodgings were built for men seeking work in a new area, but it was home to the public lamplighter and his family in 1871.

Mud Larking

An increasingly popular pursuit for tourists to London is to go searching the banks of the Thames for lost objects, from Victorian and Georgian coins to Elizabethan tiles. Does anyone know of any similar mud-larking in the Glasgow area?

Re: Mystery Tunnel in Partick

But what are we looking at? Is it the confluence of two culverted streams? Is it Victorian? And how many more of these have you explored?

Re: Mystery Tunnel in Partick

Riverbank.jpg Here is another, slightly different, one. It is the the bank opposite Glasgow Academy, about 100-150 yards north of the Kelvin Bridge. It is a metal gate high enough to be able to walk through, and the outlet pipe looks as if it may a later add-on and not the reason the gate was let i...

Mystery Tunnel in Partick

Bishops_Palace_entrance.jpg Bishops_Palace2.jpg Whilst looking for the Bishop's Palace archaeological excavation, I came across this intriguing flight of stairs with some sort of culvert at the top, which appears to run straight under the Palace. Just north of the wall, towards the photographer, th...

Necropolis Burials Map

Some years ago, I was looking for a burial in the Necropolis. I had the name and number, and a helpful member of the cemetery staff, with a map, took me straight to the headstone. No charge. I suspect things have changed, and I wondered if anyone can tell me how to access a map of where a burial is?

Robertson's Pond, Pollockshields

Please can anyone tell me anything about Robertson's Pond? It was the scene of a double drowning accident in 1858 and was probably subsequently filled in by the owners, the Caledonian Railway Company. It lay to the east of Pollockshields and near the Shields Farm. It was a popular skating pond, and ...
