Re: Does Glasgow need new shops?

On way to the GFT last night, we counted eight shop premises lying vacant on Sauchiehall St between Cambridge St. and Douglas St. Durachan, Eddy Are they all shops though? Off the top of my heid, in that area, I can think of at least four which are vacant restaurants/cafes (Costa moved over the roa...

Re: Proposed Demolition & (More) Student Accommodation

The sources I've heard from say that the internal frame of the building is knackered. It's a lovely building, and I would hate to see it go. However, I'm more of a mind to think that I'd rather have something there than an empty building crumbling around our ears. I can't see a commercial use for th...

Re: One for the railway heads

It wasn't bad, but I stumbled on this 1972 episode of BBC's Horizon series which had actual eyewitnesses and a look inside Quintinshill Signal Box, which still existed at the time - from around 2 mins in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcgX3cyE5vc (Bugger it, tried 8 times to remember how the YT e...

Re: Last Famous Person You Saw On The Streets Of Glasgow was

Chick Charnley going into Peugeot Ashfield Stadium for the speedway. Chic turned up to do the halftime draw when Thistle played Inverness Caley (they got humped 2-0). The home fans were already somewhat displeased with how the team were performing, so Chic turns up and wisely holds his tongue when ...

Re: "People make Glasgow" the new city brand

Remember going through Yoker station many moons back and there was a big Glasgow's Smiles Better Poster with that Yellow man on it In spray paint below "Without Catholics" The same could be added for any religion or group I guess, and Delmont's post made the point more eloquently than I c...

Re: One for the railway heads

I used to sit in there waiting to buy my tickets to go see my boyfriend in Wales! ::): As for upgrading to First Class - if you're going at the weekend, you get a sandwich chucked at you and free crisps/juice/tea but that's about it. Because of the weekend upgrades it tends to get quite busy in Firs...

Re: Some old Glasgow videos

Found lots of video gems on the Vimeo site of the CCA. My favourite is this one: https://vimeo.com/81395406 Starts with a bus going along Cowcaddens Road (mid demolition of the tenements - the red bricks at the end of the Buccleuch Street aren't yet built), then a walk along Sauchiehall Street from ...

Re: Does Glasgow need new shops?

I'm never quite convinced by this idea that Sauchiehall Street is dying on its a**e. Off the top of my head, you've got maybe four empty premises on the pedestrian bit (Mothercare, and the ones up the top opposite Tesco). The rest are filled most of the time they just change hands every six months o...

Re: BHS Building - Sauchiehall / Renfield Street

Octavia, if you follow the link to Canmore, you'll see that Renfield Street church was demolished in 1965. So I think the location of the building your grandfather worked in may be elsewhere.

Re: Thank goodness for the CW games

Some of us wait four weeks to get paid - two weeks isn't that bad. I'm still suffering withdrawal symptoms from the Games - had a fantastic time and even our resident pub grump was getting into it by the end. I managed to get to work in the Gorbals AND Kinning Park with no issues at all for the enti...

Re: Finnieston crane

This may be a daft question, but does anyone know if it's possible to go up this crane now? My other half is fascinated by it, and would love to see the view from the top (as would I). He's spent the day on google, and has found photos that some one has taken from the crane itself. I'm currently try...

Re: Buses Today

Carntyne station is actually in Shettleston. True story. I think it's because Carntyne the village used to be nearer Shettleston, but what used to be called High Carntyne is now where the centre of the area is. I've got to get to and from the church halls at Carntyne Square so I can't always be ars...

Re: Buses Today

that was bound to happen when half of its route turned into a 38B. it the old excuse of "no one is using it". no wonder when bus services are cut to the bone. people are bound to find alternatives. I knew that was coming. Used to run from Easterhouse to Drumchapel. Then they cut the route...

Re: Cessnock flat falling down?

I had a look at this on my way home today. I think it might be water damage to the stonework. The chimneys on that block are all replacements built in fairly modern looking red brick. And the part of the wall that's collapsed is the outside wall of the chimney itself. There's also severe discolourat...

Re: Burglar trying doors

My close door is open regularly between March and October from 1pm to 5pm. Fortunately, to my knowledge there's only been one instance in the last 10 years of a "tourist" wandering a bit further up the stairs than they should and shoulder barging a door upstairs. For some reason, we're qui...
