Re: Molendinar Burn

The Provan Mill must have a photograph someplace, I tried the Mitchell years ago, but zilch. When the mill was demolished the sandstone wheatsheaf from the roof was rescued by a mate of mines grandfaither, its a bit knocked about but still recognisable and sits in his back gairden I think he would b...

Re: High St bend

Been a while but the High Street fire last week rings a bell. The Bell o the Brae is named from that steep section of the High Street being made anciently into a "Bell" or "S" shape to enable heavily laden carts to get up the hill, a direct route being near impossible for the hor...

Re: Whiskies a gone-gone

A bottle of the gone-gone Moses Risk's Provanmill Malt has popped up on an Italian site called Whisky Paradise in Bologna, the distillery had three sources for water, a spring, Loch Katrine & Hogganfield Loch delivered via the Molendinar Burn, apparently the Huggy made the best whisky! ::): Huggy.

Re: The Govan Hooch Party

I think it was Wood Alcohol from the ICI in Townhead, smells a bit like vodka & is used by French-polishers etc, as the purple dyed Meths leaves a bloom on the varnish.

Re: One for the railway heads

Lochaber Light Railway aka the Auld Puggy Line, was still operating in the '70's, ran from the Sea Pier at Fort William to the Loch Laggan dam.

Re: Molendinar Burn

Checked the Molendinar at Provanmill today, the waterfall is superb thanks to the meltwater filling the loch.

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

I remember Gartcraig House as the Haunted Hoose, apparently there was also a large gunpowder magazine nearby, probably serviced by the canal & wouldn't be too near the house? Gunpowder presumably needed for quarries, collieries, the militia? etc!

Re: Molendinar Burn

Re-reading this stuff, smashing thread, I think the natural source of the Molendinar is a burn which once ran where Mossvale Road is now, east into the Hogganfield into that corner of the loch, south of the outflow from Frankfield Loch . This burn now runs in a culvert which drains to Hogganfield Po...

From East Dunbartonshire local history week information. "In the early stages of the war radio news programmes were hacked into with "German calling, Germany calling". Occasionally these news bulletines broadcast items of news with reference to events that were happening in Bishopbri...
