Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

Back at the Mitchell this week and had a look through the remaining documents from around 1932, but I didn't find anything much. Mr Rennie, and the other managers, had to report to the Board on how their section was performing every week, for the Board meeting in Morrison Street every Friday. In Apr...

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

A couple of things I noticed:- The Norwegian company equivalent to the CWS is Norges Kooperative Landsforening (NKL for short) and was founded on 27th June 1906 - they might have a record of what was happening in 1932. Perhaps Martin could investigate? Or, as someone has already suggested, an HG tri...

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

I was in the Mitchell archives again today, looking at more SCWS material. The only thing I found was that a William Rennie was working in the box-making department as early as 1902, so it looks like our man worked his way up over the years. One of the items I requested was a number of passport phot...

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

Must've been him, then - thanks for the info. Lockhart House is stated as being in Dennistoun - no address given. Could it have been the manse adjacent to Blackfriars? - or one of the other churches that existed there at the time?

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

"after Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland", although signed by Robert Pryce (? I think), but no religious title or designation follows his name. The Registrar recording the wedding was Peter Ferguson.

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

I think that Lockhart was a famous minister at Blackcraigs church in Dennistoun, and I'm sure I read somewhere that he wrote Sir Walter Scott's biography. There is no photo in the Stenlake book 'Old Dennistoun' and I can't find any reference in Virtual Mitchell.

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

They were married in Lockhart House, Dennistoun, which I am trying to locate - perhaps someone could enlighten us?

He lived in Martyr Street, near the Necropolis, and she lived in Petershill Road, which starts opposite Sighthill cemetery.

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

I was at the Mitchell today and had a look at the voters rolls. The Rennies did not live at 58 Marlborough Avenue in 1929, but they appear there in 1930. They are:- William Rennie, Mrs Lucy Rennie, Evelyn Rennie, Isabella Rennie. They all remain there until 1936, when Evelyn and William disappear. T...

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

There is absolutely nothing I can see on the postcard that gives us any clue to his first name or initial, which was why I was going to check the voters roll on Tuesday. Thanks to Bobby's welcome intervention, I don't need to now. We all assumed that the Uni professor was correct to start with, and ...

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

He was born around 1876, married in 1903 and his first son was born in 1904.

When the postcard was written his sons would be in their late 20s. He still could refer to them as 'the gang', but don't you think the postcard seems to have been sent by someone younger?

Re: Postcard dated November 1st. 1932

Looks like he was going to Skien.

According to Wikipedia:-

"Skien was historically Norway's most important port town for shipping timber."

I don't know what that last word is, but I don't think it is 'beware'.
